Nutritional Analysis

A nutritional analysis lets health professionals evaluate the nutritional status of an individual. This allows them to determine the presence of malnutrition, find factors that influence malnutrition and formulate treatments to nurture the body back to health.

Why Is Nutrition Analysis Important?

We often associate malnutrition with a starving individual; while this is indeed a form of malnutrition, it can also manifest as conditions like anemia, which can result from a lack of iron, vitamin B12 or folate.

Food is a basic necessity of the body. It supplies the body with nutrients that enable it to function properly. However, eating any type of food does not mean that we get the right amount of nutrients that the body needs everyday. When this happens, our health suffers and our body is placed at risk of developing health conditions and diseases. This is why nutrition analysis is important.

Nutritional analysis is an assessment done to check if the body is receiving the right amount of essential nutrients based on their health requirements. A lack of nutrients leads to nutritional imbalance resulting in malnutrition of the body.

What Are The Causes Of Malnutrition?

There are two types of malnutrition – undernutrition (lack of nutrients) and overnutrition (receiving more nutrients than you need). Both can increase an individual’s chances of having health problems.

Malnutrition is not only due to lack of sufficient nutrients in the body because of poor food choices. It can also be influenced by other factors, such as:

  • Challenges in obtaining food
  • Having a low income
  • Underlying health conditions
  • Mental health issues
