What is heart disease?

Heart disease is a broad term that refers to any condition that affects the heart's ability to function properly. It is often used interchangeably with the term cardiovascular disease, which includes all diseases of the heart and blood vessels.

Heart disease can exist in many forms, but the most common ones in Singapore are;

  • Coronary heart disease
    When the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrow or blocked, leading to chest pain or a heart attack.
  • Heart failure
    When the heart is unable to pump blood effectively, causing shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling in the legs and feet.
  • Arrhythmia
    Abnormal heart rhythm, which can cause palpitations, dizziness, or fainting.
  • Valvular heart disease
    When the heart valves do not function properly, leading to symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

What are the symptoms
of heart disease?

The symptoms of heart disease can vary depending on the type of heart disease a person has. In addition, some people with heart disease may not experience any symptoms, particularly in the early stages of the disease.

When symptoms do appear, they include;
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention promptly, as they may be signs of a serious condition such as a heart attack.

How are heart diseases
diagnosed in Singapore?

The diagnosis of heart disease in Singapore typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. The specific tests used will depend on your symptoms and suspected type of heart disease.

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
    Records the electrical activity of the heart and can help detect abnormal heart rhythms or damage to the heart muscle.
  • Treadmill stress test
    Helps diagnose coronary artery disease by showing how well the heart responds to physical stress.
  • Echocardiogram
    Helps diagnose structural problems, such as valve disorders, and assess the heart's pumping function.
  • Cardiac catheterization
    Involves inserting a thin, flexible tube into a blood vessel in the arm or leg and guiding it to the heart. This test can help diagnose blockages in the coronary arteries and other structural problems.

In addition to these tests, your doctor may also order CT scans or MRI scans.

How is heart disease treated in Singapore?

Treatment for heart disease will depend on the specific type of heart disease a person has, as well as their overall health and medical history. In general, treatment may involve a combination of medication, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, surgery.
